Study finds high prevalence of depressive symptoms among young New Yorkers
Depression and anxiety are profoundly affecting adolescents in New York City, a recent mental health report released by city health officials reveals, as reported by NBC News. The report titled “The State of New Yorkers’ Mental Health” provides an extensive analysis of the impact of these mental health conditions on the population from before to after the COVID-19 pandemic.
A key finding of the report indicates that nearly half of adolescents in the city have experienced depressive symptoms in recent years. This includes mild to severe symptoms, according to a survey conducted last year. In addition, the report highlights that most of these young people show high levels of resilience, using mechanisms such as listening to music and use of social networks to cope with their situation.
Mental health impact of the pandemic
In terms of adult outcomes, approximately one in four have been diagnosed with some form of mental disorder, a figure that is in line with the national average. However, the report notes that nearly one-third of diagnosed adults do not receive needed treatment. Lack of access to care varies significantly among communities, with Asian New Yorkers “the least likely to access care,” as cited in the text released by health officials.
Dr. Ashwin Vasan, New York Health Commissioner, commented on the variability of mental health in the city, stating that “we see a profound crisis in some communities, while observing relative wellness in others.” The impact of the pandemic has also been considerable, with a significant increase in severe psychological distress during the worst times of COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, approximately 5% of New Yorkers experienced severe psychological distress, a figure that increased to 14% two years ago and has decreased to 8% by 2023.
Socioeconomic and cultural factors
For their part, Latino, black, and white children aged 3 to 13 years reported a higher incidence of severe psychological distress compared with Asian children. This difference suggests that socioeconomic and cultural factors may influence the mental health experiences of children in different communities.
The report concludes by calling for action to address gaps in access to treatment and underscores the need for a collaborative approach to improving the long-term mental health of New Yorkers. “We also see an evolving post-COVID-19 landscape in which New Yorkers are recovering from some of the worst impacts of the pandemic and the long-term effects are still unfolding,” Dr. Vasan noted.
